The Eucharistic celebration always includes: the proclamation of the Word of God; thanksgiving to God the Father for all his benefits, above all the gift of his Son; the consecration of bread and wine; and participation in the liturgical banquet by receiving the Lord's body and blood. These elements constitute one single act of worship.

Fasting and Abstinence

On days of fasting, one full meal is allowed. Two smaller meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be eaten, but together should not equal another full meal; eating between meals is not permitted but liquids are. If a person cannot observe these regulations due to ill health or other serious reasons, they should practice another suitable form of self-denial.

Abstinence is the refraining of eating meat.

Lenten rules regarding fast and abstinence are:

• Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days of fast and abstinence.
• All Fridays of Lent are days of abstinence from meat, from which no Catholic will lightly hold themselves excused.
• All persons who have reached the age of 14 are bound by the law of abstinence. All adults (i.e., all who have reached the age of 18) are bound by the law of fast until their 59th birthday.
